-- The Science
Every active in every BloomRenew formula is here — with the human trial behind it, the exact dose used, the PubMed ID you can verify yourself, and the limits of what each study proves.
Our rule: a wish is not a fact — only what's verified counts. If a study used a higher dose than we use, or tested a different population, we tell you on this page instead of hiding it.

How to read this page
Not all evidence is equal. We grade every ingredient by the strength of its human data, and we only make "structure / function" claims (e.g. "supports a healthy stress response") — never disease claims. Here's what the badges mean.
Strong
Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials (or meta-analyses) support a structure/function benefit at a relevant dose.
Moderate
Human RCT evidence exists, but with limits — smaller samples, a different population, or a dose higher than what we use. We say so explicitly.
Supportive
Mechanistic, preliminary, or non-clinical evidence. Included for completeness — we do not build headline claims on it.
Core ingredient research
Grouped by formula. Each citation links to the study on PubMed. Where the trial dose differs from ours, the difference is flagged in amber — not buried.
Lion's Mane
Mushroom Coffee · 6:1 fruiting-body extract · part of 2004mg 6-mushroom blend
A nootropic mushroom studied for cognitive support. Hericenones & erinacines are linked to nerve-growth-factor pathways in preclinical work.
✅ Permitted claim: "Supports cognitive function & mental clarity."
We do not claim it treats cognitive decline or any disease.
16-week double-blind RCT (n=30, mild cognitive impairment): 3g/day improved MMSE cognitive scores vs placebo; scores declined after a 4-week washout.
Mori et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2009
Double-blind RCT (n=41, healthy adults 18–45): a single 1.8g dose improved cognitive reaction speed at 60 min (Stroop, p=0.005); 28 days lowered subjective stress.
Docherty et al., Nutrients, 2023
🌿
KSM-66® Ashwagandha
Calm Refocus · 300mg · authentic, branded KSM-66® (root-only extract)
The most clinically studied ashwagandha extract — 24+ human trials. An adaptogen that helps calibrate the cortisol (stress) response.
✅ Permitted claim: "Supports a healthy stress response & calm." We use the conservative "supports" language — see the honesty note on dosing below.
60-day double-blind RCT (n=64, stressed adults): perceived-stress scores improved and serum cortisol fell 27.9% vs placebo.
Chandrasekhar et al., Indian J Psychological Medicine, 2012
8-week cognitive RCT (n=50): memory, executive function and information-processing speed improved; anxiety decreased.
Choudhary et al., J Dietary Supplements, 2017 · dose 600mg/day
10-week sleep RCT (n=60, insomnia): PSQI sleep quality significantly improved; sleep onset latency and night-time awakenings reduced.
Langade et al., Cureus, 2019 · dose 600mg/day

L-Theanine
Calm Refocus 400mg · Cocoa Moon 200mg
An amino acid from tea that promotes "calm alertness" — relaxation without sedation — by increasing alpha brain-wave activity.
✅ Permitted claim: "Supports relaxation & calm focus without drowsiness."
4-week double-blind RCT (n=30): anxiety, depression measures and PSQI sleep quality all significantly improved; no daytime drowsiness.
Hidese et al., Nutrients, 2019 · trial dose 200mg/day
EEG study (50–200mg single dose): alpha-wave activity rose within 40 min; subjects reported feeling "relaxed but alert."
Nobre et al., Asia Pac J Clinical Nutrition, 2008

Melatonin
Cocoa Moon · 3mg · evidence-based low dose
The body's circadian "lights-out" signal. We chose 3mg deliberately — research shows 0.5–5mg is the effective range; more is not better.
✅ Permitted claim: "Helps you fall asleep faster & supports a healthy sleep cycle." 🇬🇧 Melatonin is prescription-only in the UK/EU — Cocoa Moon ships to US & Canada only.
Meta-analysis of 19 double-blind RCTs: melatonin cut sleep-onset latency by ~7.06 min and increased total sleep time by ~8.25 min; low doses (≤3mg) sufficient for primary insomnia.
Ferracioli-Oda et al., PLOS ONE, 2013
Clinical review: optimal melatonin range is 0.5–5mg; doses >5mg don't improve efficacy but raise the risk of next-day grogginess.

Glycine
Cocoa Moon · 1000mg · part of an 8-active stack
An amino acid that helps lower core body temperature — a physiological trigger for sleep onset — and acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter.
✅ Permitted claim: "Supports sleep quality & helps you wake refreshed."
Works as part of a synergistic stack, not in isolation.
RCT in sleep-restricted adults: glycine before bed improved subjective sleep quality and reduced daytime fatigue; polysomnography showed more favorable sleep architecture.
Bannai et al., J Pharmacological Sciences, 2012
Mechanistic study: glycine promotes peripheral vasodilation and a ~0.3°C drop in core temperature via the SCN, accelerating sleep onset.
Kawai et al., Neuropsychopharmacology, 2015 · dose 3g

Every remaining active, its dose, its role, and a representative human reference. We list amounts in mg/IU rather than burying them in a "proprietary blend."

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Cocoa Moon 300mg · also in the Mushroom Coffee 6-mushroom blend
An adaptogenic mushroom traditionally used to calm an over-active nervous system; triterpenes interact with GABA pathways.
✅ "Supports relaxation, immune function & restful sleep."
8-week RCT (n=132): Ganoderma polysaccharide extract significantly improved sleep quality, fatigue and quality of life.
Tang et al., J Medicinal Food, 2007

Magnesium Glycinate
Calm Refocus & Cocoa Moon · 100mg · highly bioavailable glycinate form
A mineral involved in 300+ enzymatic reactions and nervous-system relaxation. ~48% of US adults fall short of the recommended intake.
✅"Supports relaxation, muscle & nervous-system function." 100mg = ~28% of the 350mg supplemental upper limit — conservative and gentle on digestion.
Systematic review (7 RCTs, n=3,964): magnesium supplementation independently associated with improved sleep quality across multiple forms.
Arab et al., BMC Complementary Med & Therapies, 2023
Bioavailability comparison: magnesium glycinate is absorbed more efficiently than oxide forms and does not cause a laxative effect.
Walker et al., J American College of Nutrition, 2003
☀️
Vitamin D3
Calm Refocus · 1000 IU (25mcg) · 125% Daily Value
Supports mood baseline and energy. ~41% of US adults are vitamin-D insufficient. 1000 IU is a safe daily-support dose (UL = 4000 IU).
✅"Supports mood, immune function & energy baseline."
Systematic review & meta-analysis: low vitamin-D status independently associated with sleep disorders; supplementation improved sleep quality (strongest in deficient groups).
Gao et al., Nutrients, 2018

Zinc Citrate & Vitamin B6
Cocoa Moon · Zinc 15mg · B6 as cofactor
Both are cofactors in your body's own melatonin synthesis (tryptophan → serotonin → melatonin). B6 also supports GABA production; zinc supports sleep architecture & overnight repair.
✅ "Supports the body's natural melatonin production & restful sleep."
Zinc 15mg is well under the 40mg upper limit.
Zinc is a cofactor for the final step of melatonin synthesis; serum zinc correlates with sleep quality and slow-wave sleep (Rondanelli 2011; Takeda & Tamano 2009). B6 is the cofactor for the tryptophan→serotonin→melatonin pathway.
